“PICNIC” Japanese Teacup

This design is the result of a collaboration with product designer Kobayashi Mikiya, who worked closely with Kamide Keigo, the 6th-generation head of the Choemon Kiln. Through multiple visits and discussions at the kiln, they blended contemporary design with traditional craftsmanship.

The colorful lines represent grass and flowers in the field, the wind, and sunlight. This piece is designed to evoke the feeling of being outdoors, even when you're enjoying your drink inside. 

Each piece is carefully crafted by hand using a potter’s wheel. You can choose the teacup with or without a lid.

Choemon Kiln

Operating in a region where the various steps of pottery crafting are usually split among different studios, Choemon Kiln was among the first to bring the entire process under one roof.

While further honing their skills each day, they also strive to take their potential to new heights by embracing diverse challenges. One of their recent exciting projects is a collaboration with Spanish designer Jaime Hayon on the production of unique creations such as skull-shaped candy jars—one of which is in the collection of the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa.

Kutani ware is a pottery produced in the Kaga region of Ishikawa Prefecture and it has a history of over 350 years. It is characterized by the heavy brilliance of the five colors of green, yellow, red, purple, and navy blue that are applied to the bold and daring lines. Its long history has evolved through the tireless efforts and enthusiasm of people who have sought innovation while maintaining tradition.

The beauty of the various styles and methods of painting is known as "Japan Kutani" and is highly regarded around the world.
