GATOMIKIO Black Yamanaka Lacquerware Oryoki Bowl Set
Founded in 1908 as a woodworking shop in Yamanaka Onsen (hot springs), Ishikawa Prefecture, GATO MIKIO SHOTEN is a Yamanaka lacquerware brand known for utilizing advanced woodturning techniques. Their products are not overly glamorous but blend seamlessly into modern life.
Oryoki is a functional set of bowls designed to minimize waste in daily life, based on Zen Buddhist practices. It has been gaining attention for its ease of use, functionality, and minimalist design, making it ideal for contemporary dining.
The bowls are designed to stack neatly, with smaller bowls fitting inside the larger one for compact storage and easy portability.
One of the key charms of oryoki is its space-saving design. All the bowls nest inside the largest one, so even a six-layer set is easy to store without taking up much space.
Another benefit is its durability. Made in Japan from wood, oryoki is sturdy and resistant to breaking, even if dropped. Its lacquer coating protects against scratches and deterioration. Originally created for lifelong use by Buddhist practitioners, it is equally long-lasting for home use.
In addition, oryoki sets are practical as tableware: one set provides all the dishes needed for a meal, simplifying meal preparation.
This particular oryoki set is made from zelkova wood and finished with lacquer, following traditional Yamanaka lacquerware techniques. The wipe-lacquer finish preserves the natural woodgrain, contributing to its simple, minimalist aesthetic.
Since this set consists of multiple nested bowls, each piece requires precise craftsmanship to ensure a perfect fit. The woodgrain is a central feature of the design, so only the most skilled craftsmen in Yamanaka lacquerware are entrusted with its production.
