Hidasuki 緋襷

緋 scarlet · 襷 sash/cord

Also known as hidazuki, straw-wrap firing

Hidasuki is a pattern created in Bizen ware by wrapping each piece in rice straw, placing it in a kiln with a protective cover called a saya, and firing it in a location away from direct heat. The result is a light brown surface with reddish or scarlet lines where the straw made contact with the clay.

During firing, the straw wrapped around the clay leaves distinctive marks. The piece emerges light brown throughout, with scarlet patterns appearing where the straw touched the surface.
