Tebineri 手捻り
手 hand · 捻 twist/mold
Also known as hand forming
Tebineri is a traditional hand-forming method in Japanese ceramics where the potter shapes clay directly by hand, without the use of a wheel. The technique involves piling up stringy clay and joining the pieces together to form a single shape.
The process creates an uneven texture that can only be achieved through handmade work. Forms shaped by tebineri are not bound by mechanical symmetry or rigid precision, but emerge with a natural presence shaped touch by touch.
