Description

This is a chashaku tea scoop from Yatsuyanagi. A chashaku is a spoon-shaped tea utensil used in the tea ceremony to scoop matcha tea powder into a matcha bowl.

It is one of the most important tea utensils because it is said that it represents the values and personality of the tea ceremony practitioner. The simple, unadorned design allows you to appreciate the beauty of the cherry bark work itself.

It is not suitable for washing in water. To clean, wipe gently with a piece of tissue paper or a soft cloth.

The cherry trees used for Akita cherry bark work are mainly wild cherry trees from the Tohoku region, which grow in a harsh climate and are said to be beautiful and durable.

The cherry bark is carefully peeled off from the trunk and left to dry in the shade for a year or two to remove the moisture. Yatsuyanagi is committed to the preservation of sustainable nature and the coexistence and co-prosperity of nature and traditional crafts. They are also actively involved in planting wild cherry trees on fallow land.

Woodcrafts

In Japan, 70% of the land is covered with forests, and there are said to be as many as 200 species of trees, including coniferous trees such as cedar and cypress, and broad-leaved trees such as zelkova, chestnut, and horse chestnut, that are used for construction and woodworking. Japanese wood crafts are made by making the most of the characteristics of the wood from each production area. For example, bamboo crafts in Kyushu, Japanese cypress products in Gifu, and cedar products in Akita are famous.
