Uchimizu is the Japanese practice of sprinkling water onto streets, gardens, and entrances during the cooler hours of the morning or evening. This custom dates back to the Edo period (1603–1868).
Evaporation from the sprinkled water lowers the surrounding temperature slightly, providing relief during summer heat.
