Negoro Yamanaka Lacquerware Ladle with Leather Strap
This ladle is handmade by Yamanaka Lacquerware craftsmen. Made by hollowing out a piece of wood, it has a beautiful form with no joints and is firm and comfortable to hold.
It comes with a leather strap for convenient storage in the kitchen.
It is finished by a lacquering technique called "Negoro," in which black lacquer is applied and vermilion lacquer is applied over the lacquer. The name Negoro comes from its similarity to the texture of Negoro lacquer, which was produced by the monks of Negoro Temple in Wakayama Prefecture.
It can be used for cooking and serving various soups such as miso soup and stew. Especially when serving nabe dishes, the beautiful design makes it suitable to be placed on the table.

Yamanaka lacquerware is produced in the Yamanaka Onsen area of Kaga City, Ishikawa Prefecture, and has a history of about 400 years.
The traditional techniques of Yamanaka lacquerware were highly evaluated and became known throughout Japan, despite a period of temporary interruption.
It is characterized by the use of wood grain patterns to express a natural texture, and is made with great attention to detail.
It was designated as a traditional craft by the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry in 1975.

United StatesThe perfect ladle!
I purchased the Negoro Yamanaka lacquered ladle to go with a set of Yamanaka wooden miso bowls I previously bought. The bowls are so beautiful it didn’t feel right serving soup in them using an ordinary soup ladle. I was so happy to find this ladle that matches the red and black lacquered bowls perfectly. The ladle is large enough to portion out a nice serving and the substantial feel and balance of the ladle makes it so comfortable to hold. The craftsmanship and quality are unsurpassed!
