When combined with pine from the traditional Japanese "three friends of winter" (pine, bamboo, and plum), the "four gentlemen" are considered to be among the highest auspicious floral motifs. Historically in China, these four plants, regarded as virtuous, were likened to the qualities necessary for a gentleman, hence the term "four gentlemen." They symbolize high esteem in the auspicious motifs, while the scroll represents wisdom and knowledge.
