Description

Traditional hues bring brightness to this porcelain yunomi teacup. Its classic form is adorned with Japanese patterns and motifs, rendered in a harmonious palette.

The red decorative lines are executed in akae, using Zoho Kiln’s specially developed natural bengara pigment, prepared from a bengara material no longer in production and carefully preserved by the kiln. In soft, fluid brushwork, phoenix and peony motifs lend refinement and elegant dignity to the surface.

Whether enjoyed alone or shared with friends, this teacup brings a gentle sense of calm to the everyday ritual of tea.

Yunomi Japanese Teacups

Yunomi are a kind of vertical, cylindrical teacup. They are typically used for casual tea times. Because of the large capacity of a yunomi, the area where the tea touches the air is small, so the tea does not get cold easily. They are also suitable for when you want to drink a lot of bancha or hojicha. In sushi restaurants, tea is traditionally served in a yunomi.

Akae

Akae, or red painting, is an overglaze decoration that primarily uses red, complemented by colors such as green, purple and blue. In China, this style originated during the Song Dynasty (960 CE–1279 CE), while in Japan, it was introduced by Sakaida Kakiemon during the Shoho era (1644 CE–1648 CE) and later found its place in Kutani ware.

In Kutani porcelain, akae-saibyo is particularly famous. Akae-saibyo literally means "fine painting in red." Using an extremely fine brush, each line is drawn on the surface of the vessel with exquisite detail, creating breathtakingly intricate patterns.
