Estimated Shipping Widget will be displayed here!
This is a handcrafted stoneware figurine of a komainu, also known as a guardian lion dog, featuring a beautiful black finish that emits a delicate, soft luster. The figurine known as ungyo is characterized by its closed mouth, which is always shown paired with agyo, another komainu with an open mouth. When facing the pair, the agyo is placed on the right, while the ungyo is positioned on the left.
Komainu were introduced to Japan from China and became popular as indoor decorative elements during the Nara period (710 CE–794 CE). From the 14th century onwards, they began to be placed outdoors, guarding the entrances of shrines and temples. With their fierce expressions and powerful physiques, komainu is believed to ward off evil spirits and protect sacred grounds. It is perfect for displaying in your foyer or on a tabletop.
