This hand-painted hanabi (fireworks) hanging scroll captures the moment three fireworks have reached their fullest bloom and begin fading into the evening sky. Rather than depicting a deep black night, the artist chose the soft light of dusk, allowing delicate layers of color to settle into the silk. As the light in the room changes, the silk's subtle sheen gently shifts with it, giving the sky a quiet sense of depth and allowing the fleeting moment to unfold again with each viewing.
The fireworks themselves are built from countless fine brushstrokes that radiate outward before gradually dissolving into open space. Their remarkable precision is more than a display of technique—it captures the instant when light begins to vanish. What would ordinarily disappear in a matter of seconds is held here, suspended in silk and ink, inviting the viewer to linger a little longer with a moment that would otherwise be lost.
Near the lower corner appears the single character “祈” (inori, meaning prayer). For the artist, it is an expression of gratitude and remembrance, woven gently into the composition rather than placed at its center. It does not require reading before the fireworks. Instead, it waits to be discovered, allowing its meaning to unfold only after the light begins to fade.
The artist, Suzuki Yuri, born in 1968 in Gifu Prefecture, is renowned for her delicate and contemplative style. Her work spans poetic depictions of birds and flowers, refined classical motifs, expressive portraits, and animal scenes. A member of the Bokusai-kai (Ink and Color Painting Association), she has received numerous accolades, including selection for the 5th Maeda Seison Memorial Grand Prize. Her paintings have also been featured in the esteemed art journal Bijutsu Nenkan (Art Annual).
