Adding to the already charming essence of this tea bowl is an adorable cat that hangs over the rim, peeking inside it. Its presence is sure to make your matcha experience even more enjoyable. Both the interior and exterior of the tea bowl feature delicately painted branches of cherry blossoms in full bloom, whose colors harmonize beautifully with each other. The accents of brushed gold add a special charm.
This piece combines two beloved Japanese motifs. The image of sakura is endowed with many positive connotations and cats have been admired by the Japanese for centuries. The transparent glaze also enhances its clarity, giving it a more refined and delicate appearance.
With its lighthearted and charming motifs, this handcrafted matcha tea bowl is perfect for preparing matcha. A wonderful gift idea for those who are interested in the tradition of the Japanese tea ceremony or chado, its size is perfect for cradling with both hands, allowing the gentle warmth of the matcha to seep through the bowl into your palms gradually.

Maker / Brand
At the foot of Kyoto's Fushimi Inari Taisha Shrine, Tanaka Toubou is the kiln of artisans Tanaka Nobuo and Tanaka Michiko. In operation for 35 years, they specialize in creating unique tea ceremony utensils and daily-use tableware.
Nobuo principally creates glazed ware with a black tenmoku glaze that includes at least five percent iron. Meanwhile, Michiko's work captures the essence of each season along with gentle depictions of plants and animals, creating an emotional connection to those who admire them.

Kyo ware and Kiyomizu ware, collectively known as Kyo-yaki and Kiyomizu-yaki, are celebrated pottery styles from Kyoto. Known for their vibrant designs, finely sculpted forms, and dedication to handcrafted detail, these wares reflect Kyoto’s distinctive sense of beauty and artistic refinement.
Defined by a long-cultivated diversity, Kyo ware and Kiyomizu ware have drawn on techniques and styles from pottery traditions across Japan, evolving into a richly expressive and distinctly Kyoto art form. Recognized as a Traditional Craft of Japan in 1977, they continue to be cherished for their cultural depth and everyday appeal.

Celebrating Cat Day: Cats in Japanese Crafts
Cats are cherished around the world for the comfort they bring, whether they are basking in the sun or soothing us with their unexpected gestures. Also a familiar presence in the world of craft, cats have long been expressed in various forms through the dedicated handwork of artisans.
In celebration of "Cat Day" on February 22 in Japan, we have curated a collection featuring cat-themed plates, mugs, and lucky cat figurines. These tableware pieces add a playfulness to the dining table, while traditional maneki neko bring a sense of auspicious warmth to your living space.
