Kawari-nuri 変わり塗

Kawari-nuri refers to lacquerware with decorative patterns applied as a top coat. This technique developed during the Edo period (1603–1868 CE) as decoration for sword sheaths, giving rise to various innovative techniques with hundreds of different methods and names.
