Hand in Hand, Rebuilding the Treasured Traditional Crafts of Ishikawa
As the world welcomed the dawn of 2024, the Noto Peninsula in Ishikawa Prefecture, Japan, faced an unexpected and devastating challenge. At precisely 16:10 Japan Standard Time, an earthquake measuring a magnitude 7.6 sent shockwaves of destruction throughout this culturally rich region.
The earthquake caused severe damage to homes, buildings, roads, and essential infrastructure. Though many towns have been devastated, Wajima was one of the cities that saw significant damage, including a destructive fire that affected the site of its beloved morning market.
For centuries, Ishikawa has been celebrated for its vibrant cultural heritage, especially the traditional techniques handed down through generations. From intricately painted Kutani ware to meticulously lacquered Wajima lacquerware, these crafts are at the soul of Ishikawa's culture. The Noto Peninsula Earthquake threatened the very existence of some of these cultural treasures, leaving many artisans with the daunting task of rebuilding their lives and their crafts.
To aid in the recovery of the traditional craft industry, we launched the Musubi Love Project, inviting our community to join in supporting the rebuilding of Ishikawa's cultural heritage. Your compassion and thoughtful gesture of care will surely give hope to those forging a path toward the future.
In the past month, amidst this turmoil, we have witnessed the people of Ishikawa united in their determination to rebuild not only their homes but also the essence of their community, including their cherished traditional crafts.
We at Musubi Kiln are committed to preserving Ishikawa's cultural legacy for the generations to come. We will continue to showcase and promote the cherished beauty of these crafts, ensuring that their unique value and enduring appeal reach a global audience.
We stand in solidarity with all the people of Ishikawa, and will provide regular updates across our platforms on the rebuilding of their communities and crafts, as well as information about initiatives for donations and raising awareness. Thank you for your continued support of our artisans.
