Ring in the New Year with Pastels

Ring in the New Year with Pastels

Written by Team MUSUBI

Start off the New Year with a table spread that blends the best of tradition and modern style. This tablescape brings osechi ryori—the classic Japanese New Year feast—into a fresh, contemporary setting with pastel porcelain jubako bento boxes. The serene tones play beautifully against the rich red accents. Whether you’re gathering with family or close friends, this spread is the perfect way to celebrate new beginnings with a balance of the past and a contemporary flair.

Classic Flavors on a Fresh Palette

In Japan, the New Year is a time to welcome blessings and prosperity, with osechi ryori playing a central role. This seasonal cuisine features a collection of dishes, each imbued with symbolic meanings that express hopes for the year ahead—health, happiness, and abundance.

This year, we opted for a fresh look by plating individual servings in the Conic Modern Jubako Bento Box. The soft hues of pink, green, and baby blue add a gentle charm to the table. Each tier of the jubako unveils a delightful selection of traditional dishes, from kuromame (black beans) for diligence to tazukuri (candied small sardines) for agricultural prosperity.

Our eye-catching centerpiece, featuring decorative foods and traditional arrangements, is known as kuitsumi. The elevated red lacquer tray creates a layered effect that draws attention to its intricate details, such as the carefully placed mizuhiki knots and accents.

Paired with a luxurious Nishijin brocade table runner, the kuitsumi is beautifully integrated into a modern tablescape. Nishijin textiles, renowned for their detailed patterns and vibrant colors, have their origins in Kyoto and have been treasured since the Heian period (794–1185 CE).

A playful touch to the spread is the green bean and broccoli kadomatsu, a classic Japanese New Year decoration representing prosperity and long life. This artfully molded Arita ware plate not only adds to its festive flair but also serves as a standout piece for the holiday season.

The table setting also features an otoso sake set, inviting warmth and cheer with each shared toast.

Pastel Porcelain Jubako Bento Box

The highlight of this year’s table is the Conic Modern Jubako Bento Box, a refreshing take on the traditional osechi ryori presentation. Its pastel shades introduce a bright yet calm atmosphere. The tiers accommodate an assortment of dishes with the conical shape adding an element of surprise, inviting guests to uncover the thoughtful selections within.

Designed for both celebrations and everyday use, the Conic Modern Jubako Bento Box transitions effortlessly across occasions. Its smallest compartment doubles as a dipping sauce bowl, while the largest plate is ideal for showcasing main dishes or sweet treats. Whether stacked or used as individual pieces, this jubako elevates the dining experience with both style and versatility.
