Hirado Chrysanthemum Mikawachi Ware Chopsticks Rest

JPY ¥12,000

Only 1 piece in stock!

This chopstick rest is decorated with chrysanthemums and is made of Mikawachi ware. Although small, this gem is filled with traditional techniques and is recommended for entertaining guests or as a gift.

It is made of Amakusa ceramic stone from Kumamoto Prefecture, which is characterized by its translucent whiteness and pearly texture.

The chrysanthemum decoration technique is one of the outstanding techniques of Hirado Kohsyo Danemon Kiln, to form porcelain chrysanthemum flowers by hand. Using a bamboo tool with a pointed tip, the petals are cut out one by one from a lump of porcelain clay. After one round of cutting, the petals are raised one by one. When carved, each petal stands out sharply, but when glazed and fired, it develops a softness like natural chrysanthemums.

The work is by Mr. Ichiro Nakazato, an intangible cultural property holder of Sasebo City, Nagasaki Prefecture.

Hirado Kohsyo Danemon Kiln, as a pioneer of Mikawachi ware, has been carrying on the technique for 400 years and is highly regarded both in Japan and abroad for its outstanding technique and artistic sensibility in design.

In 1928, the company was granted as purveyors to the Imperial Household Agency. Also, its piece has also been presented as a gift to His Majesty the King of the Netherlands on several ceremonial occasions.

ABOUT MIKAWACHI WARE

Mikawachi Ware, also known as Hirado Ware, is a pottery made in Sasebo City, Nagasaki Prefecture, Japan. Known for its translucent white porcelain, it was highly popular in Europe during the trend toward Japanese crafts in the West in the 20th century. Mikawachi Ware is remarkable for its delicate modeling techniques that push the limits of porcelain, such as openwork and relief carving, and for its beautiful painting that looks like a single piece of art.

The World’s Most Beautiful Chopstick Rest

The World’s Most Beautiful Chopstick Rest is what I have named the stunning chrysanthemum chopstick rests. I bought 2 last year and was desperate for more, but I didn’t see the ability to purchase directly from the producer [I looked them up]. I also have the chrysanthemum sake cups, also stunning. They were back in stock, so I’ve ordered more to complete my set and am very very satisfied. Thank You Musubi Kiln for making this available.
