Suri Urushi Yamanaka Lacquerware Dessert Spoon
This wooden spoon is perfect for eating Japanese food and Japanese desserts. It is made by Yamanaka Lacquer, a renowned maker of wooden and lacquered tablewares.
The matte texture of the "Suri-Urushi" (wiped lacquer) finish enhances the beauty of the wood grain. Please keep in mind that each item is handmade, so there may be slight differences in finish and size.
Chopsticks are famous for Japanese cutlery, but spoons are also often used. Lacquered spoons are perfect for creating a traditional Japanese atmosphere at the table where Chawanmushi(Japanese steamed egg custard), Tofu, soup, Anmitsu, pudding, ice cream, etc. are served.
Its timeless traditional design is suitable for long-term use, daily use or when entertaining guests.

Yamanaka lacquerware is produced in the Yamanaka Onsen area of Kaga City, Ishikawa Prefecture, and has a history of about 400 years.
The traditional techniques of Yamanaka lacquerware were highly evaluated and became known throughout Japan, despite a period of temporary interruption.
It is characterized by the use of wood grain patterns to express a natural texture, and is made with great attention to detail.
It was designated as a traditional craft by the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry in 1975.

We used these for everything - dessert, yogurt, oatmeal, soups, etc. Lightweight, durable and best of all they don't make noise unlike metal utensils. Perfection!

the contours of this spoon are friendly to the touch, a completely different kind of experience than spoons make of metal. the smooth curve of the handle fits into fingers in a different way, and for a westerner, accustomed to something else, seems to make one more aware of the act of bring food from a bowl to one’s mouth. even the thickness of the bowl is a revelation … it all makes me slow down more and pay attention to the feel of the action of eating and to the food itself. the spoon is beautiful, lightweight, soft to the touch in a very human way, and i have no doubt that it will be a lifelong companion at the table. i now use it with any meal that needs a spoon.
