Animals in Sunny Spot Round Mug

The Sunny Spot series gathers seven animals with a quiet warmth. Created exclusively for MUSUBI KILN through a collaboration between Kokuzou Kiln and Atelier Yu, each mug pairs a softly rounded stoneware form with hand-painted scenes that feel as though they have emerged from a peaceful corner touched by sunlight. Seasonal motifs—falling cherry blossoms, drifting snow, swaying pampas grass—gently frame each animal, placing them within small moments of passing time.

Each design carries its own character. Cats curl together, settled into stillness. Rabbits sit nestled side by side beneath soft blossoms. Shiba Inu dogs rest side by side beneath Mount Fuji and cherry blossoms, while shima enaga (Japanese snow fairy) birds gather like small white puffs against the snow.

The mug’s round shape and generous size make it ideal for tea, coffee, lattes, and soup alike, while the thin lip and wide handle make it easy to hold and sip from. The slightly rough, earthy texture of the stoneware contrasts with the smooth Japanese paints and raised details for a pleasing tactile experience.  

Atelier Yu

Nestled at the foot of the sacred Hakusan mountain, Atelier Yu’s workshop is a serene space where inspiration flows from its surrounding natural beauty. Seasonal blooms visible through the windows—cherry blossoms in spring, hydrangeas and sunflowers in summer, and bush clovers in autumn—often find their way into the artisans' designs, reflecting the charm of wildflowers alongside delightful animal motifs. 

Skilled female artisans infuse each piece with gentle, soft colors, embracing the five traditional colors of Kutani ware, known as Kutani Gosai. They imbue each creation with warmth, crafting pottery that brings joy to everyday dining and a smile to all who use it.

Kutani Ware

Kutani ware is a pottery produced in the Kaga region of Ishikawa Prefecture, with a history spanning over 350 years. It is characterized by the heavy brilliance of the five colors of navy blue, red, purple, green, and yellow that are applied to the bold and daring lines. Its long history has evolved through the tireless efforts and enthusiasm of people who have sought innovation while maintaining tradition.
