Description

This grater plate is accented with blue brushwork painted with natural gosu pigment. The deep indigo contrasts with the muted gray-white clay body, framing the hand-formed grating surface, where each tooth is individually raised by hand using the tip of a wooden branch.

Thick and pleasantly weighty in the hand, it has a reassuring sense of solidity. Available in two different sizes, each plate is suited to preparing a range of ingredients, from small condiments to larger vegetables. The maker's mark, delicately impressed on the base, lends the piece an added sense of warmth.

Crafted by the artisans of Omi Shimoda Toubou in Shiga Prefecture, each piece is shaped, painted, and fired entirely by hand within the sole workshop still carrying on this tradition. Born as everyday tableware for the region, it reflects the beauty and honest craftsmanship that have long defined the pottery.
