This placemat is made of Tosa Washi Paper and has a wave pattern. The wave pattern is called seigaiha, which is a traditional Japanese pattern that reminds us of the blessings of the vast ocean. The infinitely expanding wave pattern is an auspicious one that expresses wishes for happiness that will last forever and for a peaceful life.
The washi has a double-layered structure. The white pattern is created using a traditional technique called rakusui, in which drops of water are applied during papermaking to form the design. Another sheet of washi is then applied to the back of the rakusui paper using a technique known as sukiawase, creating the double-layered structure.
This place mat is perfect for an individual serving. In addition to being used as a regular place mat, they are also great to place under items displayed on a shelf.
Washi paper does not dissolve when washed and does not tear easily even if folded many times. This placemat can also be used repeatedly by washing it lightly by hand and drying it, and if it gets wrinkled, it can be ironed. When ironing, it is recommended to iron from the reverse side to avoid damaging the texture.
