The Floating Sakura Japanese Teacup reflects that quality in an understated way, capturing the moment just as petals begin to fall. The teacup is crafted by Tosen Kiln, a longstanding Kyo ware kiln in Kyoto. Kyo ware’s finely textured clay gives the surface a smooth, gentle feel. The rim is carefully shaped to resemble a cherry blossom, giving the piece an overall soft and charming character. The muted ground color enhances the blossoms, lending them a fresh, delicate presence. Subtle detailing brings the design to life, from the pale yellow stamens to the varied pink tones layered across each petal. The piece carries an appeal that goes beyond the visual, drawing the hand almost instinctively.

Created as an original for MUSUBI KILN, this teacup is available in two colorways: tokiiro pink and usuzumi gray. Tokiiro pink carries a soft, warm blush, while usuzumi gray introduces a calmer, more contemporary tone. The spacing between motif and blank surface is carefully considered, giving the composition a sense of ease. A cherry blossom pattern also appears on the interior, gradually revealed in use, adding a subtle layer of discovery. A slight indentation along the side becomes noticeable only when held, forming part of the tactile experience.

Tosen Kiln

Tosen Kiln embraces Kyoto’s traditional craftsmanship while adapting it for the modern era. Originally founded in 1868 as a Kiyomizu ware wholesaler, Tosen Kiln opened a ceramics production studio in 1944. Today, the kiln continues its legacy in Kyoto’s history-rich Gojo neighborhood.

Drawing inspiration from the precise wheel-throwing techniques and luminous paintings of Edo-period master potter Nonomura Ninsei, Tosen Kiln preserves this heritage while creating pieces that suit contemporary aesthetics.

Kyo Ware & Kiyomizu Ware

Kyo ware and Kiyomizu ware, collectively known as Kyo-yaki and Kiyomizu-yaki, are celebrated pottery styles from Kyoto. Known for their vibrant designs, finely sculpted forms, and dedication to handcrafted detail, these wares reflect Kyoto’s distinctive sense of beauty and artistic refinement.
