This placemat is made of Tosa Washi Paper and features a hemp leaf pattern. This is a traditional Japanese pattern called asanoha. The interweaving shapes of straight lines look like leaves and veins and have a meaning of the healthy growth of children, in reference to the strength and rapid growth of hemp.
Each placemat is double-layered, created using a technique called rakusui. In rakusui, drops of water are applied to the washi during production to form the design. A second sheet of washi is then joined to the back using a technique known as sukiawase, giving the placemat its layered structure.
This item is perfect for an individual serving. In addition to being used as a regular placemat, they are also great to place under items displayed on a shelf.
When ironing, iron from the reverse side to avoid damaging the texture.

Known for its gentle touch and warm texture, it was designated as a traditional craft in 1976 due to its fine quality.
