Description

These wooden chopsticks from Matsukan’s Crystal series splendidly capture the vivid colors of Japanese spring flowers. The deep purple pair evokes the long cascading garlands of wisteria in full bloom, while the vibrant pink pair takes us away to hills enveloped in blankets of moss phlox, also known as moss pink or shibazakura. The rich hues and gentle texture of the brushstrokes are inspired by the picturesque views glimpsed from the windows of Matsukan’s studio.

The matte finish further enhances the natural ambiance of the chopsticks and goes beautifully when set alongside the two Hasami ware chopstick rests in pale blue and soft pink.

The Crystal series chopsticks feature the distinctive fude-gaki technique, an inventive brush-painting method developed by master craftsman Matoba Masayoshi of Matsukan. At present, his brush-painting technique flourishes in the hands of the next-generation artisan Fujii Yuya, who produces countless captivating pieces.

Lacquerware

Japanese lacquerware, also called shikki in Japanese, is a proud handicraft with a long history dating back to 5,000 BCE, and traditional methods are still followed today. Durable, light, antibacterial, and robust enough to endure for more than one hundred years, Japanese lacquerware is not only beautiful, but also highly functional.

In addition to the fine Japanese lacquerware found in antique and vintage pieces, there is also contemporary Japanese lacquerware suitable for modern life made by artisans who continue to improve their skills and pass on tradition today.
