These wooden chopsticks feature bright-colored metallic lacquer with a sheen reminiscent of the feathers of the peacock—a bird that has long symbolized warding off evil spirits, protection from misfortune, beauty, and rebirth. The dark lacquer on the lower part of the handle, broken up by lighter stripes to evoke bamboo joints, makes the vibrant colors pop. Textured tips provide a solid grip on bites of food, while the lightweight, slender profile is ideal for those who enjoy thin chopsticks.
This design was born of a collaboration between Wakasa craftspeople, who made the Malas wood base, and Wajima lacquer artisans, who applied the lacquer. Wajima artisans are renowned for their skill in crafts like maki-e and chinkin that incorporate gold powder. Here, they drew on that background and years of trial and error to develop these metallic hues, made by combining lacquer with metal powders. The result radiates a light unique to the region. Part of an initiative to support the revival of Wajima, the efforts of local craftspeople and the concept of the peacock come together here to create a pair of chopsticks that holds a deeper meaning.
Four colors are available: red, yellow, green, and blue. We invite you to choose the color that suits your style, or mix and match for a varied and vibrant table. Each pair comes in a MUSUBI KILN original box, finished with white washi paper adorned with the auspicious shippo (seven treasures) pattern for an extra sense of occasion.

Crafts
Originating in Obama City, Fukui Prefecture, Wakasa lacquerware has flourished for over 400 years and today accounts for over 80% of Japan’s lacquerware chopstick production. Its signature technique embeds abalone shell and eggshell into layers of lacquer, polished to reveal patterns inspired by the ocean floor.
While rooted in traditional craftsmanship, Wakasa lacquerware also meets the needs of contemporary life. Each piece embodies both tradition and functionality, bringing understated elegance to daily use and refinement to special occasions alike.
