This placemat is made from Tosa washi paper and features a plum blossom pattern. Plum blossoms have long been cherished in Japan and are a motif often seen on kimono and tableware. As they are among the first flowers to bloom toward the end of winter, they are considered auspicious and associated with the arrival of spring.
The washi has a double-layered structure. The white pattern is created using a traditional technique called rakusui, in which drops of water are applied during papermaking to form the design. Another sheet of washi is then applied to the back of the rakusui paper using a technique known as sukiawase, creating the double-layered structure.
The placemat is well suited to individual place settings. In addition to its use at the table, it can also be placed beneath objects displayed on a shelf.
Washi is durable and does not tear easily, even when folded repeatedly. This placemat can be reused by gently washing it by hand and allowing it to dry. If wrinkles develop, it can be ironed from the reverse side to help preserve its texture.

Known for its gentle touch and warm texture, it was designated as a traditional craft in 1976 due to its fine quality.
