Description

These placemats are well suited to individual place settings. In addition to their use at the table, they can be placed beneath objects displayed on a shelf.

Made from Tosa washi paper, each placemat is double-layered and features a white kagome pattern created using a technique called rakusui. In rakusui, drops of water are applied to the washi during production to form the design. A second sheet of washi is then joined to the back using a technique known as sukiawase, giving the placemat its layered structure.

Kagome refers to the lattice formed by bamboo or rattan woven into baskets. The continuous geometric motif derived from this lattice has long been associated with protection from evil spirits in Japan.

When ironing, iron from the reverse side to avoid damaging the texture.
