Sazameku Cascade Blue and Platinum Luster
A thin wash of bluish gray covers the uneven rim of this hand-shaped piece, catching hints of blue and violet. From there, white trails descend through the deep blue, gathering along its lower edge as if holding the color in place above the platinum-hued foot. It opens wide, with one side dipping lower than the rest.
Yamaura Saori builds the color through repeated applications and firings of wa-enogu, glass-based pigments used in Kutani ware. The white is added in the final stages and allowed to melt in the kiln. It gathers into raised lines, branches into finer paths, and thins at the edges to reveal the darker tones beneath.
The textured metallic foot forms a distinct boundary below, while the cascading lines above retain the movement created in the kiln. From the pale luster at the rim to the saturated blue and platinum below, the finish changes as the piece is viewed from different angles.

Among today’s Kutani ware artists, Yamaura Saori brings a distinctive presence. Working from her home studio, she lets her hands guide her through subtle curves, gentle distortions, and soft transitions. Her pieces are not bound by convention, yet they are unmistakably rooted in craft. At once fluid and precise, intuitive and technical, her ceramics speak of a moment captured in time.

Crafts
Kutani ware is a pottery produced in the Kaga region of Ishikawa Prefecture, with a history spanning over 350 years. It is characterized by the heavy brilliance of the five colors of navy blue, red, purple, green, and yellow that are applied to the bold and daring lines. Its long history has evolved through the tireless efforts and enthusiasm of people who have sought innovation while maintaining tradition.
