Sazameku Cascade Indigo Blue and Gold
White trails move across indigo blue in this hand-shaped piece, set against a vivid gold foot. The metallic finish gives the piece a celebratory note, while the wide, uneven rim opens the view into the vessel. From above, overlapping lines of white descend toward the dark blue center, drawing the eye inward.
Yamaura Saori builds the color through repeated applications and firings of wa-enogu, glass-based Japanese pigments used in Kutani ware. The white is added in the final stages and allowed to melt in the kiln. It gathers into thicker bands, breaks into finer lines, and spreads across the blue in patterns shaped by heat and gravity.
The gold covers the lower portion of the exterior and continues beneath the foot, where it surrounds the unglazed ring. Against the indigo blue and white above, its warm metallic surface brings a clear change in color and texture.

Maker / Brand
Among today’s Kutani ware artists, Yamaura Saori brings a distinctive presence. Working from her home studio, she lets her hands guide her through subtle curves, gentle distortions, and soft transitions. Her pieces are not bound by convention, yet they are unmistakably rooted in craft. At once fluid and precise, intuitive and technical, her ceramics speak of a moment captured in time.

Crafts
Kutani ware is a pottery produced in the Kaga region of Ishikawa Prefecture, with a history spanning over 350 years. It is characterized by the heavy brilliance of the five colors of navy blue, red, purple, green, and yellow that are applied to the bold and daring lines. Its long history has evolved through the tireless efforts and enthusiasm of people who have sought innovation while maintaining tradition.
