This placemat is made from Tosa washi paper and features a traditional pattern called shippo. The design is formed by overlapping circles of equal size, creating a continuous arrangement of diamond- and petal-like shapes. With the circles extending endlessly in every direction, shippo is considered an auspicious motif symbolizing harmony, happiness, and enduring prosperity.
The washi has a double-layered structure. The white pattern is created using a traditional technique called rakusui, in which drops of water are applied during papermaking to form the design. Another sheet of washi is then applied to the back of the rakusui paper using a technique known as sukiawase, creating the double-layered structure.
Washi is durable and does not tear easily, even when folded repeatedly. This placemat can be reused by gently washing it by hand and allowing it to dry. If wrinkles develop, it can be ironed from the reverse side to help preserve its texture.

Tosa washi is one of the three major types of washi paper, alongside Fukui Prefecture's Echizen washi and Gifu Prefecture's Mino washi. Known for its gentle touch and warm texture, it was designated as a traditional craft in 1976 due to its fine quality.
