This side plate is bordered by broad indigo brushstrokes that bring character to its simple form. Painted with natural gosu pigment, the deep blue contrasts beautifully with the muted gray-white body, whose earthy tone lends the piece a quiet warmth. Its clean, understated lines frame the food, allowing each dish to take center stage.
Thick and pleasantly weighty in the hand, it has a reassuring solidity, while the subtle irregularities of its hand-formed shape and painted decoration give each piece its own individuality. The nunome woven-cloth texture on the base, left naturally during the making process, is paired with a delicately impressed maker's mark.
Crafted by the artisans of Omi Shimoda Toubou in Shiga Prefecture, each plate is shaped, painted, and fired entirely by hand within the sole workshop still carrying on this tradition. Born as everyday tableware for the region, it reflects the beauty and honest craftsmanship that have long defined the pottery.

Omi Shimoda ware, an officially designated Traditional Craft of Shiga Prefecture, is today carried on by Omi Shimoda-yaki Toubou, established in 1994 as the craft's sole kiln. The craft began around 1750, yet was on the brink of extinction in 1989 when its final potter, Yamanaka Yasuzo, passed away. Yamanaka entrusted his techniques to apprentice Kosako Hajime, the head of the kiln. With local support, Kosako successfully revived the craft five years later.
The kiln specializes in entirely handcrafted vessels made from gray-white clay decorated with rustic designs in natural gosu, a cobalt blue pigment. Today, its vessels carry on the tradition as companions to the everyday table.
