Maker / Brand
Sakurai Chie is a Kutani ware artist with Soukyu Kiln. She is known for creating a wide range of works incorporating a vibrant array of designs, from plant and animal motifs to traditional patterns.
In order to give a soft atmosphere to her pieces, she painstakingly handles all steps of painting, from underglaze to overglaze, which is rare among Kutani ware artists. Each piece is hand-painted using Japanese paints known as wa-enogu, a feature of Kutani ware. The overglaze-painted areas are slightly thickened, creating a pleasing texture. While utilizing vivid, traditional Kutani ware colors, Sakurai arranges patterns and hues in a modern style.
Sakurai's work is both unique and accessible for everyday use, sure to touch the hearts of all who see it.

Its long history has evolved through the tireless efforts and enthusiasm of people who have sought innovation while maintaining tradition.
The beauty of the various styles and methods of painting is known as "Japan Kutani" and is highly regarded around the world.
