This piece is a type of matcha container known as men-nakatsugi. It is characterized by its cylindrical form, with the joint of the lid positioned at the midsection of the body. The "men" designation refers to the beveled edge of the lid. It is crafted from mizume (Japanese cherry birch), a fine natural wood, and because the wooden base is entirely handmade, several years are required to complete each piece. Its golden brilliance comes from the use of tin, which lends a subtle yet striking shimmer.
The lid is adorned with the kikukiri-mon (Chrysanthemum and Paulownia crest), a motif once formalized from the chrysanthemum flower and widely adopted in the decoration of tea utensils. Here, the chrysanthemum radiates with noble brightness, while the paulownia is rendered in gentle relief, creating a design that balances refinement with grandeur.
On the sides, delicate autumn grasses are painted in meticulous detail, their fine patterns offset by the red edging around the lid, which ties the composition together. Against the jet-black lacquer ground, the shimmering gold motifs recall the dignity and strength of a samurai family crest.
Light in the hand, the piece also offers the distinctive satisfaction of a lid that settles deeply and smoothly into place. With its poised form and lavish decoration, this natsume enriches the tea gathering with a sense of elegance and ceremony.
