This exquisite Kutani ware decor item features a majestic white horse in movement, surrounded by symbols of good fortune. The vibrantly painted plants at the horse's feet are shochikubai: a combination of pine, bamboo, and plum that symbolizes hope, luck, and longevity. It comes with its own tatami display stand.
The horse is the zodiac sign for 2026. A lucky animal in Japanese culture, it has a powerful, bright image. It symbolizes forward movement, progress, prosperity, and success. White horses, in particular, carry a sense of purity and are associated with safety on journeys.
Other auspicious symbols surround the main horse figure. The Japanese character on the saddle means “good fortune,” while coins symbolizing wealth sit between the horse’s front hooves. Rice bales at the back represent wealth, happiness, and a rich harvest.
Raised paints, created using a traditional slip-trailing technique called mori-e, add texture and depth. Pops of gold paint add to the celebratory feeling of this piece.
This figurine comes with its own stand by the artisans of Matsuba Tatami. Made from all-natural igusa, or Japanese rush grass, and with a border of red tatami ribbon, it adds an extra touch of Japanese festivity. Fully completing the display is a small wooden plate with the word "Kutani" and the name of the kiln in Japanese calligraphy.
