Giclée-printed on silk and finished with hand-applied color, this hanging scroll depicts a golden dragon rising from foaming waves through swirling clouds. Soft, smoky gradations build the clouds in layers of shadow, while precise lines define the scales, claws, and whiskers. Its fierce eyes glare outward and one claw grasps a glowing sacred jewel. Rendered in muted gold and sepia, the scene feels powerful yet restrained.
In Japan, the dragon has long been revered as a protector. Once invoked for the safety of the nation, it is honored today as a guardian of homes and businesses. It is said to serve Kannon, the bodhisattva of compassion, as a messenger across sky and sea. The jewel it holds, known as a hoju, stands in for Kannon. As lord of the waters, the dragon calms the seas and brings rain to the fields, and its ascent has come to embody rising fortune. Rendered here in gold, it carries a wish for prosperity.
Believed to drive away misfortune, the dragon also makes this scroll a meaningful gift for someone in a yakudoshi (“year of misfortune”).
The artist, Imai Reiho, creates hand-painted hanging scrolls centered on auspicious subjects, from golden dragons to landscapes said to bring good fortune. A member of the Bokusai-kai (Ink and Color Painting Association), Imai is particularly known for depictions of flowers and birds, animals, and landscapes, and has been listed in Bijutsu Nenkan (Art Annual).
