In the Memories of Colors Ocean Blue Perfume Bottle, glass artist Otsuki Yosuke explores the expressive possibilities of glass as a sculptural medium. Combining a diverse range of glass techniques, from blown and cut glass to his signature technique of multilayered glass, Otsuki enfolds his own memories within each piece, connecting them with the universal workings of nature to create something quietly profound. Captivated by the ability of glass to persist for hundreds of years, this work embodies Otsuki’s desire to encapsulate colors within glass so that they may remain undimmed forever.
Here, the rich blue of this perfume bottle evokes the deep hues of the ocean, while the gently frosted colors of the stopper suggest the softness of sea glass. The smooth, egg-like shape is divided by gently concave cut-outs, like porthole windows that point inward. An internal cavity is suspended in the center, recalling a bubble rising in water. This interplay between external and internal forms creates a unique refraction effect that shifts with each new angle, inviting the viewer to interact with and participate in the piece itself.
The precisely fitted stopper, with its multilayered strata of purple, green, and frosted clear glass, both complements and contrasts with the body of the piece. These hues subtly interact with one another, blending and separating based on the viewing angle like layers of mist at dawn.
A meditation on how memories are held, this piece goes beyond its role as a vessel, allowing for moments of slow looking and introspection.
