A perfume bottle encapsulating colors within unfading glass—this is the work of Otsuki Yosuke. In the Memories of Colors Sky Blue Perfume Bottle, he utilizes a unique combination of techniques to enfold his own memories within the glass.
Here, cut glass facets combine with a blown glass interior and a multilayered glass stopper to create a complex interplay between outer and inner forms. Each shift in viewing angle reveals a new aspect of the piece, inviting the viewer to interact with and participate in the work itself.
The polished facets of the perfume bottle rhythmically break up the surrounding frosted glass. Like windows, they reveal the suspended cavity within, while shifting refractions create a fantastical landscape of glass and light. A single swirl of deep blue introduces a vivid accent within the translucent form.
Accompanying this is a precisely fitted stopper, one of Otsuki’s signature techniques. Layers of blue and purple recall the softness of the sky at dawn. These hues subtly interact with one another, blending and separating as perspective changes, creating rich visual depth.
A meditation on how memories are held within color and time, this piece goes beyond its role as a vessel, allowing slow looking and introspection.
