Description

This indigo-dyed, rectangular kobachi small bowl is crafted by Takayama, a renowned maker of Hasami porcelain. The interior of the plate is delicately decorated with a serene landscape scene, beautifully framed by the traditional octopus arabesque—tako karakusa—pattern. This design, featuring endlessly winding vines, has long been cherished in Japan as an auspicious motif symbolizing longevity and prosperity.

Despite its compact size, this bowl offers a moderate depth, making it ideal for serving sauces or side dishes like marinated vegetables, pickles, or small appetizers, as well as desserts. Its petal-like soft, curved edges add an elegant and inviting touch to any dining presentation.

Kobachi Small Bowls

Kobachi, literally “small bowls” in Japanese, are designed for serving appetizers and side dishes. Deeper than a small plate but smaller than a main course or ramen bowl, kobachi are just the right size for light stews and simmered vegetables. Incorporating one or several kobachi bowls into a table setting and arranging dishes of different sizes and colors lends your meal an authentic Japanese atmosphere.

This category includes bowls with diameters under 12.9 cm (5.1 in).
