Gold Plum and Seigaiha Flared Plant Pot
Created by Kutani ware artist Ishikawa Ryusei, this flared plant pot brings together the rich colors of traditional Kutani decoration and an exploratory approach to surface and texture. Ishikawa brings established techniques into new combinations, creating a layered composition that rewards closer inspection.
The blue-green and purple enamels draw on aote, a style of overglaze decoration originating in ko-Kutani that traditionally excludes red. Yet, Ishikawa extends this palette by introducing red in parts of the design. Across the exterior, geometric and natural motifs come together, from the continuous sayagata pattern and flowing seigaiha waves to plum blossoms, each associated with auspicious meanings, including longevity, prosperity, and happiness.
Broad sections of kinsai (gold decoration) contrast with the dark shades of the underlying enamels, while patches of aochibu, tiny raised blue dots, interrupt the gilded areas. Bamboo motifs traced in gold appear within these dotted fields, bringing another auspicious symbol into the work.
The ornamentation continues down to the base, while the rim is finished in dark gray-green glaze, framing the intricate designs below. The interplay of metallic accents, contrasting colors, and varied forms gives the pot a bold, expressive character.

Maker / Brand
Rooted in the visual language of Kutani ware, Ishikawa Ryusei combines techniques rarely brought together within a single vessel. Each piece passes through eight to ten firings as deep glazes, raised dots applied in regular patterns, and bold gold decoration build up across its surface, creating depth, density, and variation.
At first glance, the effect is pure excess: immediately striking, rich with detail. Given a moment of stillness, the surfaces begin to reveal more, as different techniques, textures, and layers come into view.

Crafts
Kutani ware is a pottery produced in the Kaga region of Ishikawa Prefecture, with a history spanning over 350 years. It is characterized by the heavy brilliance of the five colors of navy blue, red, purple, green, and yellow that are applied to the bold and daring lines. Its long history has evolved through the tireless efforts and enthusiasm of people who have sought innovation while maintaining tradition.
