Gold Plum Round Plant Pot
Created by Kutani ware artist Ishikawa Ryusei, this round plant pot brings together the rich colors of traditional Kutani decoration and an exploratory approach to surface and texture. Ishikawa combines established techniques in unexpected ways, creating a strong first impression and revealing more on closer inspection.
The exterior features aote, a style that originated in ko-Kutani and uses a reduced palette from Kutani’s five overglaze enamels, excluding red. The colors shift from deep green to blue. Plum blossoms in these shades are outlined in gold using the kinsai technique. Small fields of aochibu, tiny raised blue dots, introduce a contrasting texture amongst the blooms.
A sculptural relief in gold extends beyond the patterned band onto the exposed stoneware at the rim and base. Here, Ishikawa departs from the aote palette, applying red beneath the gold. During firing, the gold develops a network of cracks, which become part of the design.
The resulting contrast between gold, deep hues, and rough clay brings together carefully composed ornament and the effects of the firing process.

Maker / Brand
Rooted in the visual language of Kutani ware, Ishikawa Ryusei combines techniques rarely brought together within a single vessel. Each piece passes through eight to ten firings as deep glazes, raised dots applied in regular patterns, and bold gold decoration build up across its surface, creating depth, density, and variation.
At first glance, the effect is pure excess: immediately striking, rich with detail. Given a moment of stillness, the surfaces begin to reveal more, as different techniques, textures, and layers come into view.

Crafts
Kutani ware is a pottery produced in the Kaga region of Ishikawa Prefecture, with a history spanning over 350 years. It is characterized by the heavy brilliance of the five colors of navy blue, red, purple, green, and yellow that are applied to the bold and daring lines. Its long history has evolved through the tireless efforts and enthusiasm of people who have sought innovation while maintaining tradition.
