This chopstick and rest set brings cherry in two forms to the table—in the yamazakura mountain cherry wood used for the chopsticks and the sakura-shaped chopstick rest in gentle pink.
The chopsticks are finished with Joboji lacquer from Iwate Prefecture, considered one of the highest grades of Japanese lacquer. It is applied differently across three sections: the handles are thickly brush-finished for rich color and a soft feel that develops with use; the middle section uses fuki-urushi, or wiped lacquer, to reveal the natural grain of the mountain cherry; and the tips are lacquered with a glossy finish for a smooth feel against the mouth. The lacquering is carried out in Obama City, Fukui Prefecture, by one or two local craftspeople who handle the entire process.
With use, the handles deepen in color and grow smoother to the touch. Matsukan believes crafted objects should be used and allowed to change through everyday life.
The chopstick rests were created through a collaboration between Matsukan and Iseya, a long-established confectionery shop founded in 1830, also based in Obama. A mold based on Iseya's original for a cherry-blossom rakugan, a classic Japanese confectionery, is used to create the ceramic chopstick rests. They are made by a Hasami ware maker in Nagasaki Prefecture, bringing a familiar confectionery form to the table.
The chopsticks are available in two sizes, 21.5 cm (8.5 in) and 23 cm (9.1 in). Each pair comes in a wooden gift box with one sakura chopstick rest.

Crafts
Originating in Obama City, Fukui Prefecture, Wakasa lacquerware has flourished for over 400 years and today accounts for over 80% of Japan’s lacquerware chopstick production. Its signature technique embeds abalone shell and eggshell into layers of lacquer, polished to reveal patterns inspired by the ocean floor.
While rooted in traditional craftsmanship, Wakasa lacquerware also meets the needs of contemporary life. Each piece embodies both tradition and functionality, bringing understated elegance to daily use and refinement to special occasions alike.
