Cherry Blossom Bark-Design Tea Canister
Estimated Shipping Widget will be displayed here!
This tea canister by Yatsuyanagi is made of kabazaiku cherry bark work from Akita Prefecture. The outer layer is made of rare frosted bark, created by specially selecting cherry trees with white speckled patterns that resemble frost. The resulting natural, rustic design has a sophistication that, though the very antithesis of flashy, makes a strong impression with its tasteful sensibility. A favorite among tea connoisseurs, tea utensils made of cherry bark work were popular among feudal lords.
The cherry trees used for Akita cherry bark work are mainly wild cherry trees from the Tohoku region, which grow in a harsh climate and are known for being beautiful and durable. The bark is carefully peeled off from the trunk and left to dry in the shade for a year or two to remove the moisture. Yatsuyanagi is committed to the preservation of sustainable nature and the coexistence and co-prosperity of nature and traditional crafts. They are also actively involved in planting wild cherry trees on fallow land.
The rough texture and delicate color of the frosted bark used for the canister create an intriguing contrast with the glossy inner part of the caddy, which has a moist texture and beautiful shine. Each canister is handmade by skilled craftsmen, reflecting the warmth of traditional cherry bark craft. Their appearance will also evolve beautifully over time with use.
Tea canisters made from mountain cherry bark are known for their breathability and excellent humidity control, which prevents condensation. They maintain a low and stable internal humidity, preserving tea or coffee in a natural state. Unlike metal, there’s no risk of rust.

Crafts
Kabazaiku is a craft made in Akita Prefecture, in northern Japan, from the bark of yamazakura, or “Japanese mountain cherry.” The captivating silk or metal-like luster unique to cherry tree bark, combined with its deep color, is used to create pieces of unparalleled beauty.
