Yuteki Tenmoku

Tracing its origins back to a kiln of the Southern Song dynasty in China over 800 years ago, this glaze, also known as oil-spotted tenmoku, has captivated artisans and collectors alike with its delicate balance of darkness and light. Master ceramicist Dobuchi Yoshiaki has studied and refined this technique, breathing new life into an ancient tradition.
The intricate pattern forms as iron-rich glaze interacts with heat, creating tiny bubbles on the surface. As these burst and crystallize, they leave behind a constellation of metallic flecks, each shaped by chance and fire.
