Engi 縁起
縁 connection · 起 arise
Engi refers to auspicious connections and circumstances that can lead to a favorable outcome. In Japanese craft, motifs associated with engi—such as the character 福 (good fortune)—are incorporated into objects to convey wishes for prosperity and well-being.
Craftspeople like Ishikawa Ryusei use engi motifs in their vessels to share a wish with those who encounter the work: "May good fortune come to you."
