Hakama 袴

Hakama are formal pleated trousers worn over kimono. They are a type of traditional garment worn from the waist down, layered over a kimono.

Hakama are worn in formal and ceremonial contexts. Men wear them during festivals such as Gion Matsuri, and practitioners wear them in traditional arts like tea ceremony and swordsmithing. Female university students commonly wear hakama layered over kimono for graduation ceremonies, though hakama are rarely worn outside such occasions.
