Shita-etsuke is underglaze painting applied directly onto the ceramic surface after bisque firing and before glazing. Potters paint patterns, brushwork, or illustrations onto the bisque-fired ceramic in this process.
The decoration is applied to the bisque surface, then covered with glaze before the final firing.
