Ebicha-Saibyo Window with Gold
Circular motifs of varying sizes move across the surface, connected by fine ebicha lines and chains that suggest the passage of time. Areas of blue, green, and gold emerge against a glaze that shifts from cream to warm yellow, its natural variations becoming part of the composition.
The reddish-brown linework is characteristic of Kanbata Shinya’s ebicha-saibyo technique. He arrived at ebicha after exploring more than eighty variations, seeking a tone that could connect the colors of Kutani ware with impressions gathered from historic European architecture. From forming to final painting and gilding, Kanbata carries out each stage himself.
The work takes its name from its source of inspiration, but Kanbata leaves its interpretation to the beholder. The colors might recall an autumn sunset in one setting, or the first signs of spring in another. Its meaning is allowed to shift with the season and the setting.

Crafts
Kutani ware is a pottery produced in the Kaga region of Ishikawa Prefecture, with a history spanning over 350 years. It is characterized by the heavy brilliance of the five colors of navy blue, red, purple, green, and yellow that are applied to the bold and daring lines. Its long history has evolved through the tireless efforts and enthusiasm of people who have sought innovation while maintaining tradition.
