Ebicha-saibyo grew from Kanbata’s long-standing fascination with detailed painting. At the center of his palette is ebicha, a muted reddish-brown he developed by mixing pigments to capture colors he remembered from stone buildings, brickwork, and paved streets in France. Drawing from historic European architecture, particularly the rose windows and ornament of cathedrals, Kanbata does not simply reproduce what he has seen. He takes these elements apart and rebuilds them within his own visual language, approaching each vessel as though constructing a world from individual parts. Form, glaze, pattern, and color all belong to the same composition.

Kanbata creates his vessels from form to final decoration, beginning with an image of the completed work. Ideas are developed in notebooks and sketches before he moves to the wheel, where the shape, clay, and glaze establish the foundation for what will later be painted.

Circular forms, chains, arabesques, areas of color, and open space are then assembled as parts of a larger structure. Even when the kiln produces an unexpected glaze effect, Kanbata may adapt the painted composition around it rather than cover it. The result balances careful planning with the variations that emerge through making, leaving each work distinct.
